N95 Fit Testing: A Visual Guide!

What Is An N95 Respirator?

Pre-pandemic, you most likely weren’t familiar with N95 masks (or respirators), let alone what it takes to be properly fitted for one. I know I wasn’t!

An N95 respirator is a type of personal protective equipment (PPE) that works to filter out at least 95% of airborne particles. It forms a seal around the wearer’s nose and mouth, and provides more protection that a regular face mask.

During the early days of the COVID outbreak, the Washington State Department of Health (WA DOH) began requiring N95 respirator fit testing for high-risk workers. Many healthcare professionals were introduced to properly fitted respirators for the first time in their careers. PPE is the first line of defense when it comes to stopping the spread. It was more important than ever to be fit tested to be sure you had adequate protection for both yourself and the people you were caring for.

Since then, the general population has become much more familiar with N95 masks. The WA DOH has continually refined the fit testing process, and many facilities are now required to comply annually with these mandates. Here at POHS, we continue to assist many caregivers and healthcare workers who walk in to complete their fit testing. Even so, there’s always a first time for everyone!

We wanted to create a visual guide to walk you through what to expect when you come into POHS for your fit test. It can feel like an odd process if you’ve never done it before, so we’ve broken it down step by step to make it as smooth and easy as possible.

Step 1: Walk In To Our Clinic - Vancouver or Longview, Washington

No appointment necessary!

We see walk-ins for fit testing Monday through Friday, during normal business hours. Don’t forget to bring your respirator with you and make sure you’re clean-shaven (if applicable.)

If you can’t part with your beard, certain facial hair styles are acceptable - but keep in mind that our MAs will check that your hair fits within the seal of the mask. You may need to shave again if it does not.

Step 2: Complete the Respirator Health Questionnaire

This questionnaire helps to determine if you are physically fit to wear a respirator without health risks. It covers your overall health, any chronic conditions, respiratory concerns, work-related activites/duties.

Rest assured, your employer does not have access to this questionnaire - it is private health information, reviewed only by your medical team.

Step 3: Review the Questionnaire and What To Expect

Our MAs do an excellent job of empowering our patients by clearly explaining procedures and making sure you feel informed and comfortable before starting.

They will review your health questionnaire with you, addressing any concerns or areas that need clarification., and then they’ll take a moment to walk you through the fit testing process.

It’s the perfect time to ask questions or let them know if you need anyextra support.

Step 4: The Sensitivity Test

Bitrex is a non-toxic solution we use during fit testing to check that your mask has a proper seal. Its unpleasant taste makes it easy to detect any leaks.

Before starting the fit test, we’ll perform a sensitivity test using a diluted form of Bitrex. If you can’t detect it, don’t worry—we have alternative solutions available.

Once the sensitivity test is complete, you’ll rinse your mouth and wipe your lips to remove any lingering taste, don your N95, and perform a seal check.

Then it’s off to the races!

Step 5: The Fit Test

It’s time to put on the hood.

Your MA will guide you through a series of exercises during the fit test, each lasting one minute. If you start to taste the Bitrex at any point, let your MA know.

If you need to try a different mask, we have a variety of styles. Three fit attempts are included in the cost of the test ($50).

Once the test is complete, your MA will record the N95 you were fit tested with and confirm with you that it’s a comfortable fit.

Step 6: Wrapping Up

Your MA will finalize your fit test certification, which is valid for one year. However, you’ll need to be re-tested if you experience weight changes, facial changes, or illnesses, as these can impact the fit of your N95.
